The new Airport Monorail would replace the existing Airport People Mover to handle the expected growth in use of the system, and to expand it in support of the GTAA "Union Station West" initiative. The GTAA "Union Station West" initiative is a plan to build a new ground transportation centre that doesn't only serve the goal of getting to and from the airport, but around the region as a whole. The the ground transportation centre located between Airport Road and Viscount Road would become home to the new Pearson Station, a station that serves Ontario Line 3, Sheppard Line 4, Airport Line C with Urban, Suburban, and Regional services, Alto high-speed rail, and a myriad of bus service which are local, regional, national, and international in nature.
The new Airport Monorail would provide a quick connection between Pearson station (the new transportation super hub), Terminal 3 (primarily serving Westjet, and airlines from the Oneworld and SkyTeam alliances), Terminal 1 (primarily serving Air Canada, and airlines from Star Alliance), Convair (the location of the GTAA administration building), and Renforth which would be smaller but still significant transit hub. The connection at Renforth could, depending on construction phasing, be the primary means of accessing the airport by transit during the construction of Pearson station.
The GTA Transit 2050 Plan would anticipate the Airport Monorail opening no later than 2038 with service from Renforth to all stations except Pearson, and in 2040 serving the massive Pearson station and ground transportation facility.
