The Cultural Core

The Bloor Danforth Line is Toronto's second oldest subway line having first opened in 1966, and many incremental extensions have brought the line to the length it is today.   The Bloor Danforth Line doesn't just cross the city, it brings together a world of cultures which are represented by businesses and communities along or a short bus away from this line.   No other street in Toronto has so many restaurants filled with global cuisine and there are festivals occurring on the street many weekends throughout the summer.  In the GTA Transit 2050 Plan, the line will extend further and have more lines intersect it to connect more people with this cultural heart of Toronto.

Extensions planned to the Bloor Danforth Line include:

1. The Scarborough Extension:  Replacing the Scarborough Rapid Transit which reached the end of its serviceable life and reducing the transfers required to reach Scarborough, this extension currently under construction should open by 2031.

2. Sherway and Lakeview Extension:  The extension of the Bloor Line eastward has long been studied and seen as a priority, and with all the intensified land uses along Dundas, at Cloverdale, the redevelopment of the Sherway Gardens area, Dixie Mall, and the major new neighbourhood on the old Lakeview Power Plant site, it is time to get this extension built.  This plan calls for this line to open in 2041. 

3. Woodside Extension:  This minor one station extension would allow easy connections between this line and the Finch Line 6, support the redevelopment of the Woodside Mall site and land use intensification, and become the home for a local bus terminal serving routes to the residential neighbourhoods to the north, and the commercial lands to the north east.   This would be one of the final pieces of the plan with an opening set to 2048.
